What inspired you to choose carpentry?
I decided to choose carpentry as I’ve always been interested in fixing things, especially around the house – things like doors. Carpentry seemed the perfect fit.
What skills have you gained so far in your apprenticeship?
The work and training I have been doing has really improved my hand skills and knowledge of general carpentry. I have been doing things such as fixing doors, window boards, and first and second fix in new homes.
Tell us about your work experience
I was working on a site in Hornchurch – I was actually working with the dry liners there to try to improve my all-round skills, and then I was approached on my last day by the carpenters and asked to be an apprentice for SEC. Jane at New City College helped me massively with this and it was great that I had the opportunity to do the work experience.
What has been your favourite part of working on this project?
The site was close to my house which was convenient, and the health and safety measures were excellent. Plus, there was so much going on that I could watch and observe and then get to do some hands-on work myself.
What advice would you give other students who want to do an apprenticeship?
I’d recommend speaking to the team at New City College because there are people that can help and give you advice. Also look for an apprenticeship that offers good prospects and pay where you will really learn and improve your skills. I also like it because I still enjoy going to college one day a week to help balance the learning experience.
What are your future goals after completing your apprenticeship?
I plan to complete my qualification, continue working on-site, and hopefully increase my earnings as I gain more experience.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your apprenticeship?
One of the biggest benefits is being able to apply the skills I have learnt away from work – such as at home. It’s great knowing I can fix things myself and feel confident in my abilities to use tools.
What type of things did you work on at the Park Rise project?
I observed and assisted with door installations, with ironmongery fittings and with window reveals.
Did you face any challenges and how did you overcome them?
I was carrying out a task and I accidentally made too many holes, so I had to repair the mistake using wood filler. It was a learning experience and it improved my precision for next time.
What key lessons have you learned through your apprenticeship?
I’ve gained a solid foundation in carpentry and hands-on experience in a real work environment, which has been invaluable.
How has the support from your tutors and employer helped you?
My employer has been incredibly supportive, always checking in and making sure I was doing well mentally and professionally. At college, my tutors provided extra help whenever I needed it, especially with paperwork and evidence for my portfolio.
Has your apprenticeship boosted your confidence?
Yes, it has improved my confidence massively. Being able to learn and work at the same time has been a great experience and I’d really recommend it.
