Inspired by her grandad, Lucy O’Connor chose to do an apprenticeship and study the Level 2 Painting and Decorating course at New City College Hackney. She says the course, and being able to work with an employer at the same time, have both boosted her confidence.

She believes one of the most valuable parts of her studies has been forming new friendships with her classmates. She says: “We’ve built a really supportive group, and working as a team has helped me enjoy the learning process more. It’s made a big difference to my motivation.”

Read our Q&A below with Lucy and find out what advice she would give to other students considering an apprenticeship.

Why did you decide to study Painting & Decorating at Hackney campus?

I was inspired by my family, especially my grandad, who worked in the painting and decorating trade. Watching him over the years really sparked my interest. I’ve always enjoyed more practical work, and I like being active and working with my hands, so this course felt like the perfect fit for me.

In what ways has the course helped you prepare for an apprenticeship and your future career?

The course has given me a strong understanding of what’s involved in an apprenticeship – both the practical side and the theory. I now understand how the work is assessed and the percentage split between college and actual work with the employer. It’s also boosted my confidence and made me feel more ready to take my career further.

What key skills have you gained that have helped you during your apprenticeship?

I’ve developed a range of practical skills in painting and decorating, including how to use the tools properly and apply different finishes. On top of that, I’ve improved my communication skills and grown in confidence, especially when talking to colleagues and clients on-site.

What part of the course have you found most valuable?

I’d say one of the best parts has been meeting new people and forming friendships with my classmates at Hackney. We’ve built a really supportive group, and working as a team has helped me enjoy the learning process more. It’s made a big difference to my motivation.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

I’d definitely recommend it. An apprenticeship is such a good way to build your skills and experience while earning some money. You learn so much on the job, and everything you’re doing is helping you work towards your future in the trade.

What are your ambitions after completing your apprenticeship?

After finishing my apprenticeship, I’d like to become self-employed and eventually run my own business. I want to be able to take on my own clients and manage projects independently – that’s the long-term goal!

What has been the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship so far?

The most rewarding moments are definitely when I finish a job and can step back and see what I’ve achieved. It’s a great feeling of pride to look at the completed work and know that I did that.

Have you faced any challenges during your journey, and how did you overcome them?

Yes, I had a few challenges at the start. It took a while to find the right placement, but after spending time working in different companies, I eventually found one where I felt comfortable and supported. That made a big difference to my experience.

What support have you received from your tutors at New City College and from your employer?

My tutors at college have been really supportive. They always make time to help, whether it’s with the theory we have to do or advice about practical tasks. My employer has also been great, making sure I’ve got the right tools and PPE and helping me get stuck into the work. It’s a team effort, and I’ve always felt backed up along the way.
