“Take every opportunity to branch out, try new things, and never turn down work experience.”
Natalie Bays, now Deputy Centre Manager at the bustling Mercury Shopping Centre in Romford, began her journey as an adult student at New City College’s Ardleigh Green campus.
“College changed everything for me,” Natalie said. “I had followed a traditional academic route with GCSEs and A Levels, but studying as an adult gave me real independence and helped me discover what I was passionate about.”
Though talented in art and painting, Natalie realised her true ambition wasn’t to be an artist – but to build a career where creativity played a central role. “I had a lightbulb moment – I knew creativity needed to be part of my life, even if I wasn’t making art full time.”
Natalie credits her time at college for teaching her the value of saying yes to new experiences. “Take every opportunity to branch out, try new things, and never turn down work experience,” she advised.
Now in a leadership role, Natalie helps oversee every aspect of running the shopping centre – from HR and finance to marketing, engineering, customer service, and tenant support. “No two days are the same. It’s a varied role and as rewarding as you make it.”
Natalie’s journey shows how adult education can unlock unexpected opportunities – and lead to a fulfilling career that blends creativity, leadership, and purpose.
