Tommy Wyatt is studying A Levels in Law, History and Sociology and was recently selected for a sought-after industry placement at Birkett’s law firm as part of the SMILE programme.
Along with four other successful students from New City College Havering Sixth Form, Tommy attended the week-long work experience which has confirmed his ambition to train as a solicitor when he completes his A Levels next year.
He said: “The work experience placement helped me develop my skills and have a clear understanding of what I want to do in the future. I now know that I definitely want to go to university or onto a higher apprenticeship with a view to working in a legal company, such as Birkett’s.
“I feel more prepared and confident about my future as I’ve actually experienced what the day-to-day work would be like. I think it’s great that the college gives students access to programmes like this SMILE initiative and I’m really grateful I got the opportunity.”
Tommy completed his work placement at Birkett’s Chelmsford office following a successful interview. Almost 100 applications for the scheme were received from students across London and the south east – and just 17 were selected.
Tommy added: “I’m enjoying my time at New City College. It’s particularly motivating knowing that my teachers and the way the college is run has been observed and has been awarded Outstanding by Ofsted.”
A Level Law teacher Gina Gola said: “Our 5 students who were selected for the SMILE programme, including Tommy, found it incredibly enriching and it has provided them with valuable insight into the legal profession.”
The SMILE programme, run by Birkett’s, is committed to supporting social mobility. It is designed to give all students the opportunity to practice as a lawyer regardless of their socio-economic background. The work experience placements give students in Year 12 the opportunity to work at a UK Top 50 law firm, helping to widen access to the legal profession and attracting talented young people to the sector.
