Applied Science (Level 3 Extended Diploma)

Entry requirements

GCSE Average Points Score: 3.50, English Language and Maths grade 4, plus grade 4 in Science and two other grade 4 GCSEs.

Course information

This course is a two year programme and is equivalent to 3 x A Levels.

After successful the completion of the first year of this course, you can choose to study the following pathways.

There are 4 core units:

  • Principles and Applications of Applied Science I
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
A choice of 2 optional units from below:
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
  • Electrical Circuits and their Applications
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Biological Molecules and Biochemical Processes
In the first year there is an emphasis on building skills, both scientific and professional. You will learn practical skills and how to evaluate and present quality written work whilst adhering to deadlines which prepares you well for university. The first year units will enable students to follow the Applied Science pathway as a discrete qualification.

Students learn to analyse and critique scientific literature and build on reporting and analysis skills specific to their chosen career pathway.

Learners on their second year of the Biomedical Science pathway will study 3 core units and 4 optional units.

  • Principles and Applications of Applied Science II
  • Contemporary issues in Science
  • Investigative project

A choice of 4 optional units from below:

  • Genetics
  • Biomedical Science
  • Diseases and Infections
  • Biological Molecules and Biochemical Processes
  • Medical Physics Applications
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Applications of Organic Chemistry
  • Diseases and Infection

Students learn to analyse and critique scientific literature and build on reporting and analysis skills specific to Biomedical Science pathway.

This extended diploma is a two-year course. Students begin with a Foundation Diploma in the first year and, upon successful completion, progress to the Extended Diploma in the second year.
