Financial support while you study.
If you are aged 19 and over, an Advanced Learner Loan could help you pay for the costs of your study. These loans are provided by the government and our advisers can help you to apply.
Advanced Learner Loans are provided by the government via the Student Loans Company (SLC) and are available for students aged 19 and over who want to study a level 3 or above further education course, including Access to Higher Education courses. Students aged 19-23 studying for their first level 3 qualification can claim free tuition and don’t need to take a loan.
The money from the Advanced Learner Loan is paid directly to your education provider (for example New City College) so you don’t have the money in your bank account. The loan is very easy to apply for and you must get a Learning and Funding Information Letter from the college which contains all the information you need to apply.
Your loan repayments only start in April after you have completed your course and you are earning above £25,000. If you complete an Access to Higher Education course and choose to continue your studies directly on to a university degree, the loan is written off upon completion of the degree.
