No formal entry requirements, though an interest in cars and basic mechanical knowledge is useful.
This Adult Skills course is designed for learners who have a passion for cars but little or no experience of how engines or mechanical systems work. It provides a supportive introduction to the fundamental principles of car maintenance, helping you build confidence as you develop essential practical skills.
Throughout the course, you will explore key areas such as basic engine troubleshooting, routine servicing, and carrying out simple mechanical repairs. Learning is delivered through a combination of theory and hands-on practice, enabling you to understand how different components function and how to maintain them safely and effectively.
With cars available in the workshop for practical tasks – and the option to work on your own vehicle if you wish – you will gain real-world experience that reinforces your learning and builds practical confidence. By the end of the course, you will feel more self-assured in maintaining your car and understanding its essential mechanical needs, providing a solid foundation for progression into more advanced automotive pathways.
The College does not provide parts or materials for vehicle maintenance. If you arrange with the tutor to bring your vehicle into the garage for a task, you will need to supply the necessary parts, while the College provides access to its equipment and tools. Overalls are available, but learners must wear sturdy protective shoes or boots and the purchase of good heavy duty, good grip gloves.
