The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PCET) is a Level 7 qualification for those aiming to teach in the post-compulsory education sector, including further education colleges, sixth forms, and adult learning environments.
This full-time pre-service programme is designed for aspiring teachers who want to develop their knowledge of curriculum design, inclusive teaching strategies, and effective assessment methods. You'll gain the skills to support a diverse range of learners, from 14+ students to adults returning to education, while building confidence through reflective practice and self-evaluation.
A key part of the course is a 250-hour placement, including at least 150 hours of direct teaching - 100 of which must be in your specialist subject - across a minimum of two different settings to ensure varied and practical teaching experience.
You will complete four compulsory modules, worth a total of 120 credits: Effective Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Subject Specialism; Supporting Learners in the Lifelong Learning Sector; Portfolio of Practice; and Practitioner Research. This qualification prepares you for a rewarding career in the dynamic and evolving post-compulsory education and training sector.
Higher Education programmes are taught and assessed using learning outcomes and QAA Benchmarks (where available) to enable you to demonstrate learning and achievement for modules, levels and programmes.
All learning outcomes have to be successfully addressed in the assessment process. All of our teaching staff are experienced professionals in the field of education. All students are allocated a personal tutor who will be your first point of communication should you have any queries or concerns. Regular 1:1 sessions will take place within the classroom where there will be the opportunity to discuss your course and progress.
You will also be supported by a mentor within your placement who will work alongside your tutor and classroom observer.
