Aspiring architects selected for developmental workshop

Two aspiring New City College A Level students were recently chosen to attend an intense five-day architecture workshop run by the organisation Drawing Matter.

Held at the Drawing Room in Bermondsey East London, the workshop offered tuition and guidance to selected promising architecture students from London and beyond.

Students Gursimar Singh Kaur and Sukhy Kaur, who both study A Level Interior and Architecture Design at Havering Sixth Form, were part of the project which had five different themes for the five days: Memories, Objective, Subjective, Imagination and Celebration.

A group of around 45 chosen students, including Gursimar and Sukhy, were able to work on their personal development, network with professionals from the architecture and design industry, meet fellow students, listen to inspiring talks and take part in lively discussions.

Kerry Baker, Group Deputy Curriculum Director for A Levels at NCC, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students, enabling them to develop and progress their skills. They are looking forward to applying the lessons they have learnt in their future work.

“The talks, workshop sessions and discussions they took part in were impactful, motivating them to further explore their own creative processes.”

Drawing Matter is an organisation that explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice through exhibitions, publications, public events and workshops for students and practitioners.

Now in its eighth year, the programme aims to help those young people with ambitions to become architects, to reach their full potential.

Sessions are led by Andrew Clancy, Professor of Architecture at Kingston University, supported by a team of influential young architects and tutors. This year there were more applications for places on the workshop than ever before.
