Esports students on top form with three big wins in succession!

New City Dragons show they are the ones to beat at Esports as they clinch a hat-trick of wins in their last three games – even beating a European team!

The Dragons, based at NCC Tower Hamlets campus in Poplar, have gone from strength to strength since starting on the Esports course in September.

They are following in the footsteps of NCC Phoenix, another New City College Esports team, based at Redbridge campus, who have also been successful in their first few games.

Both teams are playing against other colleges in Overwatch 2 and Rocket League in the British Esports Association Student Champs tournament.

The games are held in the specially designed, futuristic Esports rooms at Tower Hamlets and Redbridge campuses, where the students are honing their skills to snatch these latest impressive wins.

New City Dragons beat BSC Bears (Barnet and Southgate College) 11-0, 9-0, and 4-2 in the Rocket League game as part of the first phase of the Student Champs Tournament.

They then went on to beat French team LIL Esport RL2 with an overwhelming victory of 8-1, 4-1 and 5-1. And to complete the hat-trick, the players then had a tough game against a third team in Rocket League – but fought to the end and eventually came out as winners!

Fraz Arshad, Senior Curriculum Manager for Computing at Tower Hamlets campus, said: “The New City Dragons team played very well and I am proud of them for winning these games in a very tough competition. They showed effective communication and worked together as a unit to secure success, even when the games got tough.”

He added that the team were now looking forward to meeting their next opponents.

The British Esports Student Champs features some of the biggest and most popular Esports games available, including League of Legends, Valorant, Overwatch 2 and Rocket League. It is the UK’s largest amateur grassroots tournament for students aged 12 and over.

Last year there were over 5,000 students from more than 200 schools and colleges who competed. The grand final was watched by a live audience and had 250,000 online views.
