New City College hosts uplifting Activity Day for Parkinson’s UK

NCC’s Havering Sixth Form campus was buzzing with positivity when an inspiring charity day was held in partnership with Parkinson’s UK, bringing together members of the Havering and District branch for a fun-filled and heart-warming event.

The Activity Day was a real celebration of community and connection and gave the guests the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of engaging sessions designed to lift spirits, promote wellbeing, and encourage movement and creativity.

From seated and standing Zumba and non-contact boxing, to relaxing head, shoulder and hand massages, there was something for everyone. Other highlights included an immersive art still-life drawing session, table tennis, a mobile phone and IT surgery, singing sessions, a quiz and a raffle to round off the day.

The event was proudly supported by New City College staff who provided a fantastic buffet lunch, and a team of enthusiastic Student Ambassadors, whose warm welcome, participation and helpfulness was appreciated by the guests. There was also some brilliant entertainment from the Havering Sixth Form student Jazz Band.

NCC Principal Janet Smith welcomed special guests Deputy Mayor of Havering Sue Ospreay and Caroline Rassell, the Chief Executive of Parkinson’s UK, pictured above.

Caroline gave a keynote speech and thanked everyone involved in organising the day, particularly Maria Thompson from the Havering Parkinson’s group who, she said, was ‘a very special person’.

She spoke about how these types of events are crucial for raising money for research into the disease and they were also hugely beneficial for people in the community with Parkinson’s.

Caroline said: “Our core purpose is to provide care, hope, better treatments and ultimately a cure. But being active is something that I believe strongly in, as it’s great for your physical and mental health and allows you to make new and different connections. That’s why this Activity Day is so important.”

She also praised the college Student Ambassadors, saying: “These young people have been a bundle of energy throughout the day. If they are the future, then the future is very bright!”

Another guest said: “The jazz band and the Student Ambassadors were absolutely fantastic. They made us feel so comfortable and really added to the positive energy of the day.”

Phil Hall, Havering Sixth Form Deputy Principal, said: “It was a joy to see the connection between our students and the Parkinson’s UK guests. The day brought a lot of laughter and shared fun and was a brilliant example of how our college can support and engage with our local community.

“I’m proud of our students who helped and entertained our guests, and our staff for their enthusiasm and compassion. It was a fantastic day for everyone involved.”

The Parkinson’s UK Activity Day is just one example of New City College’s commitment to community outreach and inclusion – and it definitely left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
