Royal Television Society award for teacher who starred in Classic Car TV show

New City College Vehicle Maintenance teacher Amand Ayensu, who was one of the main stars in a TV series called Classic Car Garage, has won a Royal Television Society award.

Amand, who has taught at NCC for over 23 years – starting at Tower Hamlets College and now based at Ardleigh Green Campus – was part of the Classic Car Garage team who were presented with the runners-up trophy in the High Volume Factual category of the Yorkshire TV Awards.

They were pushed into second place by winners, The Yorkshire Vet.

The series, which is like a classic car version of popular BBC hit The Repair Shop, was shown last year on TV channel Yesterday (Freeview 27), and all 10 episodes can still be streamed via the U app, formerly UKTV Play.

Amand, who says he loves his teaching job, was delighted with the award and is now back filming a similar series for a YouTube channel – bringing much-loved dream machines back to their peak performance.

During the run of the Classic Car Garage show, he charmed TV audiences with his cool and calm persona, and the classic car owners who sought his advice on the programme were full of praise for his knowledge.

Series Producer Paul Windle said: “New City College is very lucky to have such a wonderful and talented man delivering lessons to your students. We were thrilled to have him as one of our key experts on the show. It was heartwarming to watch him work his magic on the classic cars and his professionalism made the owners so happy.”
