Special guests enjoy Afternoon Tea treat at OKN1 restaurant

A delicious afternoon tea, prepared and served by Level 1 Catering and Hospitality students from New City College Hackney Campus, was enjoyed by guests from the Hackney Circle residents group.

Hosted in the college’s stylish training restaurant, OKN1, the afternoon tea showcased the students’ skills and received glowing praise from guests.

There was a spread of various sandwiches, pastries, cakes and salads as well as teas, coffees and soft drinks – all created and served by the students as part of their practical assessment. The event was complimentary for the invited guests and gave the students real-life restaurant experience.

One guest, Rowena Altheer, who attended with her husband David, said it was a five-star afternoon.

She said: “We had a very dainty but filling, well cooked and professionally presented afternoon tea at OKN1.

“The savoury and sweet pastry cases could not have been more perfect melt-in-the-mouth, the ‘vegetarian sausage roll’ veggie filling was delicious and the classic choice of dainty sandwiches and rolls were all generously filled.

“The young staff were efficient, polite and caring. We so enjoyed the experience and the surroundings, we will be back for lunch or dinner very soon!”

The Hackney Circle is a creative social community for older Hackney residents, and the afternoon tea offered a friendly, welcoming space for conversation and connection – as well as the chance to sample the students’ tasty treats.

Hackney Campus Deputy Principal Katie Stafford said: “We’re very proud of our students for contributing to such a successful event. To receive glowing feedback like this builds confidence and ensures the students feel appreciated. Well done to all students involved.”

Pawel Knapczyk, OKN1 Manager and head of Catering and Hospitality at Hackney, said the afternoon tea had provided the Level 1 students with invaluable experience in practising their skills to become future professionals in the industry. They will now progress on to the Level 2 Catering and Hospitality course.

He added that it had been a busy time for the team at OKN1, who also recently hosted very successful events for the Association of Colleges, the nursery graduation, and Lexington Catering – all of which received many compliments about the high standard of food, service and professionalism shown by the students.
