Students learn the art of Thai massage and cookery on exciting trip to Bangkok

Students studying Hair & Beauty and Hospitality & Catering courses at New City College were given the opportunity to travel to Thailand to study for qualifications in the art of Thai massage and Thai cuisine.

The exciting trip to the bustling city of Bangkok was enjoyed by 24 lucky students – chosen because of their commitment to their course, their attendance and reliability.

They learned new skills and achieved specialist professional qualifications at the Bangkok University – at no cost to themselves.

It was a busy and informative visit, leaving no time to rest. From day one the Catering students were in classes with the top Thai chefs with the expectation they would learn the dish from demonstrations and then cook it to a high standard. To pass the qualification, the students had to complete their chosen dishes during a three-hour exam.

The Beauty students had the same pressures to complete their Thai massage course and pass an exam at the end to ensure they had learned the techniques required.

Although the trip involved learning and study, there was also a chance for students to explore the culture of Thailand by joining excursions to the floating market, temples, the Elephant Sanctuary, Chinatown, street markets and various outings to see the vibrant life of Bangkok central.

Maurice Haskew, Senior Curriculum Manager for Catering and Hospitality at NCC, said: “I am sure this experience will stay with these students for many years to come. I could see some of the students developing their own personal skills, such as communication and independence, and many of them now have a real enthusiasm for travelling.

“I would like to thank the college for the insight in recognising the importance of such international visits.”
