AAQs

As part of a national update to post-16 education many older vocational qualifications such as the BTEC Extended Diploma are being replaced by AAQs as well as T Levels.

What’s an AAQ?

These courses are the new generation of career-focused qualifications designed to give you the same university and career opportunities as traditional A Levels or BTECs, but with an even stronger link to real-world skills.

AAQs (Advanced Applied Qualifications) will allow students who do not meet the entry requirements for a T Level, to study at Level 3 whilst retaking English and/or Maths, then progress on to a T Level course once they have achieved the grades they need.

Applied Science and Medical Science AAQ (Combined Level 3 Extended Certificate)

This course is replacing the Applied Science Level 3 Extended Diploma.

IT and Computing AAQ (Combined Level 3 Extended Certificate)

This course is replacing the IT Level 3 Extended Diploma.

Health and Social Care AAQ (Combined Level 3 Extended Certificate)

This course is replacing the Health and Social Care Level 3 Extended Diploma.

Early Childhood Development AAQ (Combined Level 3 Extended Certificate)

This course is replacing the Childcare and Education (Level 3 Diploma NCFE CACHE).

With an AAQ, you’ll:

  • Gain practical experience and industry insight while still developing strong academic knowledge.
  • Be assessed in different ways, through a mix of coursework, employer projects and external assessments, so you can show your strengths in more than just exams.
  • Progress to university, higher apprenticeships or employment with confidence, supported by a qualification designed with employers and universities in mind.
  • AAQs are modern, recognised and respected, giving you the skills, confidence and flexibility to take your next step.
  • What’s changing with Level 3 courses?

From 2026, some older qualifications such as BTEC Extended Diplomas will no longer be available. They’re being replaced nationally by new T Levels and AAQs (Advanced Applied Qualifications), modern, career-focused courses designed with employers and universities.

  • Can I go to university after a T Level or an AAQ?

Yes! AAQs carry UCAS points and are recognised by universities and employers. An AAQ Extended Certificate is worth one A Level.
