Entry requirements

Enrolment on an A Level programme requires a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9 - 4, including English and maths.

Specific criteria for this subject:
  • A minimum average point score of 4.25
  • Grade 4 English Language GCSE; Grade 4 Maths GCSE; GCSE Art & Design 4 or Portfolio

Course information

Throughout this exciting two-year digital Photography course you will learn how to use a DSLR camera and develop digital editing skills using industry standard software. On the course you will have an opportunity to work in a number of different photographic genres, including portraiture, landscape, urban, still-life, fashion and beauty, abstract and advertising. You will develop research and analytical skills, and in response to a number of different briefs you will create imaginative and innovative outcomes. You will produce a digital portfolio of your work.

The Photography course will enable you to develop the creative skills and confidence to work within the creative arts. During the first year of the course you will complete a course induction and work both independently and in groups on a number of different projects. In the second year you will complete an independent coursework project and take part in a practical 15 hour exam. You will also produce a Personal Study which takes the form of an extended essay.

The course is studied with two other A Levels. It may be studied alongside any of our A Levels, but combines well with creative courses, including Fine Art, Graphics and Advertising, Interior and Architectural Design or any of the creative options. Analytical courses such as Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, Religious Studies and Politics are also complementary.

What Can This Course Lead To

Progress to university, further study, a higher level apprenticeship or employment.

The A Level Photography course can lead to further study in Photography or Art and Design. Students can progress to an Art and Design Foundation Diploma or other creative courses. A Level Photography has enabled many of our students to progress onto a number of degree courses, including Digital Photography, Fashion Photography and Commercial Photography. Careers include graphic designer, magazine features editor, photographer or press photographer.
