No formal entry requirements, though an interest in pottery or craftwork is recommended.

Course information

This course offers a chance to learn and refine hand-building, throwing and decorative techniques, exploring the creative possibilities of clay. You’ll focus on key methods such as pinching, coiling, slabbing, Moulding, and throwing on the potter’s wheel while developing skills in surface decoration, including texture application, pattern design, and glazing. 


Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to draw inspiration from diverse cultures and artists, incorporating these influences into your own work. As you progress, you’ll also build confidence in using ceramic terminology and key industry terms.

  • Induction and Course Outline.
  • Health, Safety and Risk assessment.
  • Identify artistic/ cultural influences as a starting point for practical work. 
  • Identify a range of different clays and firing processes for your ceramic work.
  • Use hand-building techniques to construct a 2D or 3D form or shape. 
  • Use throwing and trimming techniques on the potter’s wheel.
  • Use a variety of surface decoration techniques. 
  • Glaze a finished item.
