Bringing festive cheer to the local community

Performing Arts students brought some festive goodwill and cheer to the local community when they took part in the Hornchurch virtual Christmas lights switch on event on Saturday 28th November.

The students, from New City College Ardleigh Green campus, created a dance routine especially for the occasion and performed it with pre-recorded singing vocals to the popular Mariah Carey hit, All I Want For Christmas Is You.

They worked extremely hard, along with their teachers, to polish this performance and turn it around in just two half days, including learning choreography, filming, recording vocals and editing.

Organised by Havering Council, the virtual lights switch on event replaced the usual Christmas town centre gathering held each year with food stalls, fun and Father Christmas.

The students had almost 1,000 people viewing online as they lit up the stage with their dazzling group piece. It was streamed via the council’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Performing Arts Lecturer Claire Marsh said: “We wanted to send out a positive and cheery message following the negativity of the year so far caused by Covid. We hoped we were able to spread some goodwill and cheer to the people of Hornchurch!

“Our students’ commitment and behaviour was so professional, and I want to give special mention to our staff, Jamie Brown and Nathan Slater, for such a quick turn around on production.”
