Julia Lopez, Member of Parliament for Hornchurch and Upminster, recently paid a visit to New City College’s Havering Sixth Form campus to witness first-hand the advancements supported with £4 million government funding.
The investment, part of the post-16 capacity fund, has catalysed a comprehensive two-year improvement initiative at the Havering Sixth Form campus. With an additional 200 students welcomed this academic year and projections indicating further growth, the college has strategically allocated funds to bolster its teaching facilities. Recognised as one of only 44 institutions nationwide to receive this funding, New City College is gearing up to accommodate a flourishing student body.
During her tour, Lopez had the opportunity to explore the newly created science laboratories, equipped to industry standards, alongside the refurbishment of existing facilities. She also saw enhancements to social spaces, underscoring the college’s commitment to providing conducive environments for both study and relaxation.
Expressing her thoughts following the visit, Lopez commended the college’s dedication to fostering academic excellence and facilitating access to STEM career pathways.
She said “It is always a pleasure to visit Havering Sixth Form College and I am very grateful to Principal Janet Smith for taking the time to talk through her ambitious plans for young people in my constituency. With 200 extra students attending this year and applications forecast to rise again for next year, these new facilities are vital to ensuring that students at the College have a high-quality place to learn. I am particularly pleased to see the focus on upgrading science facilities, a real focus area for the Government, that will help local students access STEM career opportunities.”
