New City College is proud to celebrate national Apprenticeship Week that shines a spotlight on the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals and the economy. And the college is even prouder of the industry links, expert trainers and the support it provides to help apprentices thrive.
NCC has created a special National Apprenticeship Week website which highlights all the fantastic achievements of students, employers and staff.
Featured student Drew is a Carpentry and Joinery apprentice who is gaining hands-on experience at DSJ Bespoke, a professional joinery workshop which is part of the DSJ Group.
Drew says that his apprenticeship is giving him the chance to earn and learn – and he loves every minute of it.
He said: “I have learnt so much from the skilled professionals since I started working here. At first I was watching, observing and just asking questions, but now I am trusted with individual tasks and using the machinery.
“I love spending time in the workshop. Every day is different and I am like a sponge, soaking up everything I am being taught. I find that I learn quicker through practical work, rather than being in a classroom every day.”
Another successful NCC apprentice, Olivia, was studying A Levels but quickly realised she had chosen the wrong pathway. She switched to a Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship – which she felt would be more suitable for her career aims and says making the change was one of the best decisions she has made.
She said: “It was scary deciding to swap from A Levels to an apprenticeship, but looking back now, I’m so glad I made that decision.
