A striking display of influential, historical figures and the impact they have had on the world was a focal point for Black History Month at New City College campuses.
The large posters, pictured, were set up on easels in the Havering Sixth Form Atrium, and gave details of well-known people such as Nelson Mandela and civil rights activist Rosa Parks. There were also some lesser known figures celebrated, like filmmaker Sir Steven Rodney McQueen and author and actress Maya Angelou.
As well as the posters, Black History Month was also celebrated with an Unsung Heroes and Heroines competition for students who were asked to research and promote their chosen character in a format of their choice, such as a written article, podcast or artwork. Prizes included a £50 Amazon voucher and a £25 Nandos voucher.
A Black Lives Matter focus group discussion was held for students to express viewpoints and debate issues, and BLM themed articles and creative writing will be featured in this month’s college magazine, The Writeous.
