Powerful stories and inspiring moments at NCC’s Counselling Conference

New City College Ardleigh Green hosted its annual Counselling Conference and Jobs Fair – a busy community event that celebrated resilience and growth.

The conference, organised by NCC staff Jules Goodger and Fay Apps, brought together students, alumni, guest speakers and local employers for an event filled with heartfelt storytelling, wellness activities, and career opportunities.

Aimed at empowering future counsellors, the conference was opened by former New City College student and Counselling graduate, Mark Wilson, whose deeply moving speech left a lasting impact on everyone in the room. Mark courageously shared his journey of coping with unimaginable grief, telling how both his children had died from cancer at the age of 19, his son in 2014 and his daughter in 2018.

Mark said: “I had counselling to try to just keep going and it was with the help of the counsellors that I did get through it. That’s why I decided to pursue the Counselling qualification. They inspired me to take the course so that I can now help others who need support, particularly those who need mental health counselling after experiencing devastating grief. It is a legacy to my children.”

He said New City College had been tremendously supportive and it was due to the teachers, managers and the whole counselling team that he had been able to complete his studies and achieve the qualification.

Mark then revealed in a truly shocking blow that he has recently been diagnosed with cancer himself, but he is determined to fight on and use these challenges and his own experiences to shape his work in counselling.

One student at the conference said: “Mark’s story was incredibly powerful. It reminded us all why we’ve chosen this career – to help others, no matter what life has thrown at them.”

Adding a spiritual and holistic dimension to the event, guest speaker Brandon Hadwin – a certified Shihan-Ku teacher – spoke about his passion for creating transformation, alignment and connection. He told how he believes the power of energy can heal and balance the body, mind and soul, and he shared his journey into the world of Jikiden Reiki. His session ended with a lively Q&A, with students and guests keen to find out more about alternative therapies.

Special guest, the Deputy Mayor of Havering, Councillor Sue Ospreay, also joined the conference and her presentation praised the students and professionals in attendance.

She said: “Today has been so eye-opening. To be in a room full of people who devote their time to helping others, or are currently training to help others is inspiring. You are all amazing and it has been a privilege to come along and join you today.”

The conference also included a calming yoga session led by Jo Rayment, offering students a chance to unwind and reconnect, and entertainment from Ardleigh Green Performing Arts student Charlie, whose singing was enjoyed by everyone.

Alongside the conference, a Jobs Fair gave students the opportunity to meet with key employers and services in the local community, including Saint Francis Hospice, Basildon MIND, You & Me Counselling, and Rainham Foodbank.

It was an invaluable opportunity for students to network and explore future roles in the sector.
