Successful sixth form opens up more student places due to popular demand

New City College’s popular Havering Sixth Form campus in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, has announced that due to increased demand for many of its academic A Level and vocational BTEC courses, it will be offering a higher number of student places in September this year.

The college has also extended its ‘NCC Guarantee’ to Friday 10th February – ensuring that those who apply before half term will secure their first-choice course, subject to meeting the entry requirements.

To accommodate the increased number of students, there will be more social spaces, additional classrooms and a refurbished, enlarged restaurant on campus.

The sixth form, which recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary, has been an incredibly successful Centre of Excellence for A Levels over the years, supporting thousands of students into top universities, apprenticeships and employment. Last year more than 50% of the total number of students gained places at their first-choice university – many of these were at the prestigious Russell Group such as Exeter, Durham, York, Warwick, UCL, King’s College and Queen Mary.

Other students, supported through the college’s excellent relationships with many leading London businesses, went on to secure Higher Apprenticeships with City law firms as well as respected companies like KPMG, Barclays, EY and TfL.

The college helps students reach their full potential with expert teaching, one-to-one Pastoral Tutor support and an extensive enrichment programme which includes sports teams, a debating society, a choir, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and much more!

With such a diverse range of A Level subjects and BTEC provision, there is a course to suit every student’s career ambitions. Among the 40 A Levels offered – including specialist subjects like Law, Architecture, Economics, Geology, Music, Politics and Philosophy – there are two new subjects, Environmental Science and English Language, starting in September 2023.

Extended Diploma BTECs, which are equivalent to 3 A Levels, are a popular vocational alternative to the academic A Level study route, giving students the chance to combine classroom study and exams with practical work placements and the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a specific industry or sector, such as Business or Science.

Popular BTEC courses at the sixth form are Health & Social Care, Games Development, TV & Film Production, Digital Publishing, IT, Public Services, Travel & Tourism, Sport and the recent addition, Sport & Exercise Science. A fantastic new partnership with Spurs gives Sport students a coaching pathway leading to possible employment at the world-famous football club through the Tottenham Hotspur Football Development programme.

And to add even more choice, the campus also now offers the new T Levels in Health and in Legal Services.

Deputy Principal Phil Hall said Havering Sixth Form is dedicated to providing every student access to the highest quality education, helping them to gain confidence and aspire to be the best they can be.

He said: “Our principal aim is to provide a curriculum which not only develops our students’ academic skills, but also empowers them to make a positive difference to their own lives and the wider community.

“We are very proud of Havering Sixth Form and what it has to offer. We have a superb track record of achievement and supporting students into university or employment, and with the increased spaces we are now able to offer, even more students will have the opportunity to be a part of our success.”

Go along and find out what Havering Sixth Form can offer you. An Open Evening is being held on Wednesday 8th February between 4pm and 7pm.

As well as Havering Sixth Form, New City College has another specialist academic centre – Attlee A Level Academy in East London – which is a smaller campus but offers the same excellent quality of education, a wide choice of A Levels and outstanding student progression. Attlee is easily accessible for those applicants from inner city boroughs such as Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest and Hackney.
