Become an Apprentice

Start your career journey with an Apprenticeship.

What Is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job with training. It allows you to earn while you learn, gain hands-on experience, and achieve nationally recognised qualifications. As an apprentice, you’ll split your time between working for an employer and studying with us to gain valuable skills and knowledge for your chosen career.

Explore our FAQs below to help you start an apprenticeship. Learn entry requirements, two routes to apply, programme lengths, and the support from providers, mentors, and employers.

  • What are the requirements to be an apprentice?

    • You can apply to be an apprentice from 16 years old
    • You must have lived in the UK for the past 3 years
    • You must have the right to work in the UK
    • You will have to undertake an assessment/skills test to ascertain your suitability for the course
    • You must not be in full-time education

  • Two ways to gain an apprenticeship

    1. Apply for a role that we are advertising on this page. This works very similar to a normal job recruitment process. You will have a screening interview with us at the college, be asked to complete some online maths and English assessments and be put forward for an interview with the employer. The employer will then make a shortlist of candidates that they would like to interview. The next stage would be to then go for an interview with the employer. If/when you are successful, you will begin the sign-up process on to the apprenticeship and begin working with the employer.

    2. Source your own employer that is willing to take you on as an apprentice and then come to us. We will then contact the employer and go through all of the information with them to make sure they were suitable and go through similar information with you. You will still need to complete the screening interview and assessments but this will be so that we can collate your sign-up pack. If you have already found an employer, please reach out to our apprenticeship team on apprenticeships@ncclondon.ac.uk to support your with application. Please note, the employer you find will be your employer throughout the duration of your apprenticeship.

  • How long will an apprenticeship take?

Apprenticeships typically take between one and four years to complete dependent on the qualification and level you are taking. Find out more about the different apprenticeship levels here.

  • What support will I receive during my apprenticeship?

Your employer and training provider will make sure you receive sufficient support during your studies.

Your employers job is to ensure that your training fits your personal requirements, offers the skills needed for the job and satisfies national standards. They will also be there to help and support you through any challenges or problems.

  • Do I have to pay anything to complete an apprenticeship?

No. There are no tuition fees or costs attached to an apprenticeship. In fact, while you are an apprentice, your employer pays you a salary.
