“I chose an apprenticeship because it felt like the perfect balance between earning and learning. I didn’t want to go down a purely academic route – I wanted to get out and work straight away.”

Laquan is nearing the end of his Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration, working with the London Borough of Havering and studying at Ardleigh Green Campus. He says being an apprentice has given him hands-on opportunities, has boosted his confidence and has been the most rewarding experience in his educational journey. He has made a real contribution to his office team – all while achieving a nationally recognised qualification.

He has also received fantastic feedback from his manager at Havering Council, who described him as “an outstanding apprentice” with a can-do attitude. She said: “Laquan has consistently demonstrated exceptional commitment, professionalism and personal growth. From the outset, he has shown a strong ability to learn quickly, adapt to new tasks, and take initiative when supporting teams across the service area.”

What made you decide to take an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship because it felt like the perfect balance between earning and learning. I didn’t want to go down a purely academic route – I wanted a working environment straight away. The idea of applying what I was learning in a practical setting really appealed to me. Instead of waiting until after university to start building my career, I was able to do it from day one, and for me, that just made sense.

What advice would you give your younger self about apprenticeships?

I’d tell my younger self to really do the research and not be afraid to ask questions. Make sure you understand the role, what’s expected of you and what opportunities are available. I’d also say, be proactive. Take every opportunity to learn from the people around you and build relationships. The networking side and the practical skills you gain are just as important as the qualification itself.

How have you found balancing work, study and life?

I won’t lie – it can be challenging at times. There are definitely moments when coursework deadlines and work responsibilities come at the same time.

But it’s taught me so much about time management and staying organised. Planning ahead is key. I’ve learned how to prioritise properly and to make use of the support around me, whether that’s from my manager or my tutor. It’s a bit of a juggling act, but when everything comes together, it’s really rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

The hands-on experience, without a doubt. Every day is different, and I’m constantly learning from professionals who’ve been in the workplace for years. I also really value the independence and responsibility I’ve been given. It makes me feel trusted and respected, and like I’m genuinely progressing towards my career goals rather than just studying for the sake of it.

What surprised you most about being an apprentice?

I was surprised by how much responsibility I was given early on. I expected to be doing very basic tasks for a long time, but I was quickly involved in meaningful projects that actually made an impact. I was also surprised by how helpful everyone has been. My colleagues genuinely want me to succeed, and that makes a huge difference. It makes the whole experience feel less intimidating and much more motivating.

How have you found the support from your tutors at College?

My experience in class has been really positive. My tutor has been consistently supportive and always takes the time to explain things clearly. If I don’t understand something the first time, she’s more than happy to go over it again. The feedback I’ve received has been constructive and tailored to me, which has really boosted my confidence. Whenever I’ve needed guidance on coursework or balancing my workload, she’s been approachable and encouraging. That support has made a big difference and has helped me feel well-equipped throughout my apprenticeship.
