Course information

A Level History has to be studied alongside 2 other A Levels or alongside 1 other A Level and 1 Level 3 Extended Certificate/AAQ.

If you're studying at Havering Sixth Form:

This A Level develops independent thought, clear argumentation, and strong skills in analysis and evaluation. You will study a broad span of early modern and modern history across multiple countries, from revolutionary Europe to the rise and fall of communist powers, taught by specialist staff with excellent student feedback.

Across two years you’ll cover Britain 1625–1701 (conflict, revolution and settlement), France in Revolution 1774–99, and Germany 1871–1990 (united, divided, reunited), alongside historical interpretations and a research-based investigation. Assessment is 80% exam and 20% coursework, with three examined papers and one coursework component; the course requires study of more than one country and a chronological range of at least 200 years.

If you're studying at Attlee A Level Academy:

This course explores defining periods in British and world history across roughly a millennium, encouraging you to question evidence, debate interpretations, and understand how past events shape the present. You will examine Anglo-Saxon England and the Norman Conquest, the politics and religion of the Crusades, and modern Britain’s rapid social change from the late nineteenth century to the present.

Assessment includes three exams and a coursework essay completed in the second year. The programme builds valuable skills in critical thinking, structured argument, and independent research that are highly regarded by universities and employers.
