Course Overview

Entry requirements

You need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including GCSEs in English, Maths and Science. A Merit grade at Level 2 in Applied Science will also be considered for entry.

Information

The Foundation Diploma is the year 1 of an Extended Diploma. Learners achieve the qualification and then decide which pathway to follow.

All Learners study the same units. There are 4 core units:

  • Principles and Applications of Applied Science I
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application

A choice of 2 optional units from below:

  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
  • Electrical Circuits and their Applications
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Biological Molecules and Biochemical Processes

In the first year there is an emphasis on building skills, both scientific and professional. You will learn practical skills and how to evaluate and present quality written work whilst adhering to deadlines which prepares you well for university. The first year units will enable students to follow the Applied Science pathway as a discrete qualification.

Students learn to analyse and critique scientific literature and build on reporting and analysis skills specific to their chosen career pathway.

Further Information

Most of our students go on to the second year to continue their studies in their chosen pathways.
