The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), certified through Pearson Edexcel, is an independent research project where students plan, research and deliver a topic of interest as a dissertation or an artefact

What is the EPQ?

Learn about this qualification to take alongside your main A Level or BTEC study programme.

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), certified through Pearson Edexcel, is an independent research project where students plan, research and deliver a topic of interest in one of two formats:

Dissertation Pathway: A written report of approximately 5,000 words

Artefact Pathway: A practical outcome (a model, performance, or artefact) accompanied by a research portfolio and activity log

Students undertaking the EPQ can choose between the Dissertation or Artefact Pathway, concluding with a project presentation. The qualification is equivalent to half an A Level, offering up to 28 UCAS points. It also cultivates essential skills, including research, analysis, and presentation, while promoting personal growth in areas such as confidence, time management, and problem-solving.

  • What are the benefits of the programme?

    • University Preparation: Equips students with independent study skills that are highly valued by top universities, showcasing their ability to manage complex projects and conduct in-depth research.

    • Skill Development: Builds critical thinking, research, project management, and presentation skills essential for academic and professional success.

    • UCAS Points: Worth up to 28 UCAS points, equivalent to half an A Level, enhancing university applications.

    • Career Exploration: Encourages students to explore areas of personal interest, guiding future career choices.

    • Stand Out: Distinguishes students in competitive university and job applications by demonstrating initiative and commitment.

    • Personal Growth: Enhances confidence, time management, and problem-solving skills, fostering overall development.

  • Who can take the EPQ - A Level or BTEC students?

The EPQ is available to both A Level and BTEC students – subject to entry requirements and timetabling – giving them the opportunity to enhance their academic and practical skills alongside their main qualifications.

  • Is it studied alongside main subject courses?

Yes, the EPQ complements students’ existing courses and can align with their subject areas or personal interests. For example:

    •  Dissertation Pathway: A history student might write a report analysing the long-term effects of the Industrial Revolution.

    •  Artefact Pathway: An art student could design and produce a mixed-media installation exploring cultural identity, supported by research into contemporary practices.

The EPQ also encourages students to explore topics beyond their current curriculum, fostering creative and independent thinking.
  • How long is the study each week?

Students dedicate approximately 3–5 hours per week to their EPQ.   This includes research, planning, experimentation, analysis and preparing the presentation. The workload is structured to be manageable alongside other studies, helping students develop strong time management skills.

  • Course Structure

Choosing a Topic: Selecting a subject of personal interest or relevance to future career goals

Planning and Research: Developing a timeline, identifying sources and conducting research

    Developing the Project:

              1. Dissertation Pathway: Writing a detailed research paper with clear analysis and conclusions

             2. Artefact Pathway: Producing a practical outcome supported by a shorter reflective report

Reflection and Evaluation: Keeping a production log to track progress and document challenges

Presentation: Delivering findings or showcasing the artefact to an audience, building valuable public speaking skills

  • How to apply

Students can apply for the EPQ at their A Level Programme Meeting in March, or for BTEC students, at enrolment in August. Tutors and the EPQ coordinator will provide detailed guidance on the application process, eligibility, and timelines.
  • Where can this programme lead?

University: Many universities, including top institutions, value the EPQ, and some may offer reduced entry requirements for students who achieve high grades

Career Opportunities: Demonstrates initiative and research skills to employers
