A day in the life… Public Services students get a taste of their dream careers

Public Services students had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of the profession they hope to progress to once they leave college.

The students, based at New City College Havering Sixth Form Campus, took part in some fantastic work experience sessions, taster days and industry apprenticeship placements with the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade and the Army and were praised for their energy, enthusiasm and engagement.

For many students these brilliant experiences enabled them to make their minds up about their future career plans.

London Fire Brigade

A group of students attended the London Fire Brigade Experience Day, held at Paddington Fire Station, which was fun and informative, giving them a great insight into what being a firefighter is all about.

Student Archie Warner said: “It was absolutely amazing! I now know what the daily life of a firefighter looks like and I 100% know that I want to join.”

Ted Nunn said: “It was very informative and gave me more knowledge about what happens on the job and what firefighters do day-to-day. Attending the experience day has allowed me to make a more accurate decision about what I want to do in the future.”

And Harry Brend added: “We did a lot of practical exercises which I really enjoyed. It was also very informative and has given me a good idea about what it takes to be a firefighter.”

The British Army

At the Army work experience session, held at Woolwich Army Barracks, students got a taste of Army life and were able to fully appreciate the wealth of career opportunities.

Ernestas Baubinas said: “It was the best day ever. The activities were great and the staff were brilliant. I am really looking forward to joining the Army now.”

Fellow student Anaiah Aruna said: “The sessions were interesting and provided me with a very good insight into Army life. It has changed my perspective of the Army and I now want to join up – whereas before I was set on joining the RAF!”

Belle Harrison added: “I really enjoyed the experience and want to go again! They provided us with full kit, so I really felt like I was part of the Army for the day.”

Metropolitan Police

The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship taster morning with the Met was held at the Anglia Ruskin University London campus and students had the chance to take part in insightful discussions as well as hands-on activities, learning what it would be like to combine academic learning with frontline policing.

Ruby Richards said it had motivated her to start her application to the police, adding: “It was a really interesting and informative morning and gave me a clear insight into the Degree Apprenticeship programme.”

Anish Kumar said: “I really liked the session and it has helped me decide that I definitely do want to join the Met Police.”

Alfie Kirtland said: “I enjoyed the activity where we got to experience a realistic crime scene and played the part of officers questioning witnesses. I now know what would be expected of me if I joined the police.”
