Employer Engagement Day highlights vital role of industry partnerships

Key professionals from the Health and Social Care sector and the Sport and Fitness sector met at New City College Hackney for an Employer Engagement Day to share collaborative ways in which they can help shape student success.

Held at OKN1 Restaurant at the Hackney Campus, the event brought college staff and employers together to discuss new ways of empowering students to transition seamlessly from the classroom to the world of work.

The event was organised by NCC Hackney’s Senior Curriculum Managers Ilyas Mehter (Health, Care and Early Years) and Thomas Vittles (Sport and Fitness) to highlight the vital role of partnerships between the college and industry professionals.

The group shared insights on how collaboration with the college leads to better skilled employees of the future – giving students the opportunity to gain practical work-related skills, confidence and industry relevant knowledge.

Alice, from the Community College Hospital Foundation Trust, told the group: “We offer volunteer spaces for New City College students on the Health and Social Care courses. Our on-site online training incorporates safeguarding, events, manual handling, and dementia training.”

This comprehensive approach not only prepares students for future careers, but also deepens their understanding of critical areas such as dementia care and safety protocols.

Stephanie Clarke, Manager at The Sundial Centre, emphasised the value of on-the-job training. She said: “We offer block placements and 60 to 100-hour work experience for students, which builds their confidence.”

These opportunities provide students with hands-on experience, enabling them to bridge the gap between theory and practice while building their knowledge of real-world settings.

The event celebrated the success of these partnerships, with employers reflecting on the importance of maintaining strong relationships with the college to ensure students are properly supported.

New City College Hackney remains dedicated to building on these connections, empowering students on Health and Social Care and Sports courses to excel in their chosen fields. Through initiatives like this, the college continues to be a beacon for innovation and excellence in education.
