What subject do you teach?
I teach 3 different courses. They are: Level 3 Electrotechnical Apprenticeship, Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma, and Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation.
Why is your subject relevant?
These electrical courses are relevant to the construction industry, to building regulations and to the UK’s BS7671 wiring regulations. They provide learners with an opportunity to progress to higher education and to specialise within the industry.
What’s the best thing about teaching?
The best thing about teaching is seeing the joy of learners achieve their goals, and allowing learners to use their own initiative to solve challenging problems by creating their own strategies.
How did you get into teaching?
I was a mentor and trainer before becoming a teacher. It was a natural progression to then start teaching.
What is it like to work at New City College?
Working at New City College can be challenging with some learners but generally it is a great place to work where support is in abundance.
What advice would you give to an early career teacher?
I would tell them to always be prepared with a clear lesson plan that has a definite structure. They should lead by example, such as being cheerful, respectful, courteous and always willing to listen and take advice. Start your lessons with enthusiasm and review them every 10 to 15 minutes, ensuring there is a class discussion to keep students engaged and involved. Then finish with a summary of what has been taught.
What has been your biggest teaching challenge?
I think throughout my career, the lack of resources at some of the places I have taught has seriously affected the teaching and learning outcome.
What has been your biggest achievement?
I can think of many wonderful teaching achievements, however the one that stands out for me is helping a learner with severe dyslexia to successfully progress from Level 1 to Level 3, and eventually become a fully qualified electrician.
Who has inspired you the most?
The support I have received from my colleagues and my manager has given me a huge amount of inspiration.
