Job opportunities for SEND students at careers progression fair

A Careers Progression Fair especially for SEND students to think about their options after college, was held at New City College Ardleigh Green campus.

Organised by the Careers department, the fair was attended by many businesses, training providers, charities and organisations offering work experience and industry placements as well as opportunities for full-time and part-time jobs.

Popular stands with the students included Barclays, the Co-op, Havering Volunteer community engagement advisors, the Jobcentre Plus, Mencap, Havering Council’s Children’s Services, the Shaw Trust, Ixion Holdings, The Sycamore Trust and Talper SEND Provision.

There were also a variety of activities for the students to take part in to enable them to explore careers in different formats.

Careers and HE Adviser at New City College, Coral Green, said these types of events help the students with their life skills and learning, giving them exposure to all the different ways they can progress from college to a successful future.

She said: “This was a wonderful experience for our students on special education needs courses and our low-level learners, which has really broadened their horizons. Although they were meeting the business and community representatives for the first time, they were enthusiastic and confident.

“They are definitely much more aware now of the various routes they can take after leaving college and the support that is available to them.

“They made connections with advocates of support programmes, apprenticeship pathways, traineeships and community volunteering and the feedback they gave me was that they found the event exciting and interesting.”

Three extremely helpful student ambassadors from the SEND department – Paige Watson, Ethan Rogers and Brayden Draper – were presented with certificates for their assistance, which involved escorting students from classrooms to the event, encouraging them to join in with the career activities and looking after the visitors.
