Law firm’s masterclass gives student valuable insight into legal careers

An A Level student from New City College embarked on a valuable visit to the London-based law firm, BDB Pitmans, where he was given an insightful introduction to careers in the legal profession.

Student Muttee Mirza participated in one of Uptree’s professional ‘Experience Days’ where he received a warm welcome and a comprehensive briefing on the day’s schedule. A representative from BDB Pitmans gave an overview of the company’s opportunities and apprenticeships available to students.

The day unfolded with engaging Q&A sessions featuring graduates and apprentices, including representatives from the University of Law. Muttee shared his feedback on the sessions, emphasising the importance of learning from the experts and viewing these interactions as a key to success.

Muttee said: “We had a short break before diving into the ‘demystifying video interviews’ segment. The experience of recording myself in a mock video interview – initially daunting – turned out to be an excellent opportunity to showcase myself while helping to alleviate my nerves. We looked at exemplar applications, receiving valuable tips and tricks for navigating such processes.”

A highlight of the event for Muttee was the group case study task. Students were divided into groups to research the social, environmental, and economic impacts of developing a sixth Universal Studios in Bedfordshire.

Acting as lawyers, groups had to advise Universal Studios on the feasibility of the development, presenting their findings to a BDB Pitmans lawyer for assessment and feedback. Muttee said he really enjoyed the task and it helped him to break through the fear barrier of speaking confidently within a group setting.

The day concluded with a workshop focusing on key interview tips.

Reflecting on the experience, Muttee said: “I am so thankful for this opportunity. Events like these are pivotal for young people in their pursuits. Even in the face of rejection or setbacks, there is always light at the end of the tunnel, and the key is to keep getting back on your feet.”

Recently taking on the role of an apprenticeship ambassador at Rate My Apprenticeships, Muttee looks forward to extending his extracurricular activities to fellow students.

He is currently studying A Levels in Law, Politics and Spanish at Havering Sixth Form campus, and hopes to one day go into the legal world and make a positive difference in people’s lives.

We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours!
