New City College footballers on the Tottenham Hotspur Education and Football Development Centre programme had the chance to meet England and Spurs player Dominic Solanke during a tournament at the club’s training ground.
The 40 NCC players, from Havering Sixth Form, Epping Forest, Redbridge and Hackney campuses, were watched by Solanke as they competed in the football tournament against other teams and colleges.
Fresh from his recent call-up to the England Men’s national squad, the striker – who has represented England at youth, under-21 and senior levels – then offered advice to the players before taking part in a Q&A to discuss his own story and rise to becoming a professional football player.
His appearance was to celebrate the success of the ground-breaking football programme which provides pathways for young, talented players to reach their footballing and academic potential.
Five Further Education colleges, including New City College, are part of the initiative which allows students aged 16-19 years to study full-time while taking part in elite football training three times a week and competing in League and Cup competitions for their College.
Speaking at the event, Solanke said: “It was amazing to come and help inspire young people from colleges across the local area and support the great work that Tottenham Hotspur FC does in the community – the guys really put a shift in this afternoon!”
