Media teachers delighted to be collaborating with professionals from the Barbie and Paddington movies

New City College Creative Media teachers have been privileged to host and be part of industry panels where they collaborate with other educators and share best practice.

The panels, called Nurturing Ideas, have been set up by the London Screen Academy and the Film and TV Educators Network (FTVN) – and have involved filmmakers who have worked on productions such as the Barbie, Paddington and Wonka movies.

Chris Butler, Senior Curriculum Manager for the Creative Industries at NCC Ardleigh Green Campus, said hosting the panel with experienced filmmakers and hearing about their passion for the sector left him enthusiastic and full of hope for the next generation of young screen talent.

He said: “I loved having the opportunity to represent NCC and being able to hear what questions other teachers had and relating that to my own teaching. I left the event feeling uplifted that TV and film teachers are all working incredibly hard to develop their students to become the new industry leaders and innovators.”

The audience at the event included TV and film lecturers from across London and the Q&A session hosted by Chris, was with Rosie Alison and Tara Cairns from Heyday Films.

The session focused on developing and nurturing ideas and both Rosie and Tara – experienced professionals who have worked on the Paddington, Barbie and Wonka blockbusters – were able to reflect on their careers and share how ideas and concepts come about, and the challenges these bring.

Other discussions by the panel highlighted the ways in which young people might be able to get into the film industry. The advice from all the experts was that being curious and passionate about your subject and making the effort to talk to people in the sector were all vital to getting ahead and getting noticed.

New City College is excited to be in partnership with the London Screen Academy and values its involvement in the FTVN, which is a coalition of educators, aiming to support the development and impact of screen education across the UK.

NCC Hackney Campus will be hosting another FTVN panel in February.
