People’s Choice Award won by talented sight-impaired artist Ruqaiya

Congratulations to former New City College Art and Design student Ruqaiya Asim who was presented with the prestigious People’s Choice Award at this year’s Cass Art Prize competition.

Ruqaiya, 22, was given the honour for her captivating multimedia installation, titled Communication with My Guide Dog.

Having achieved the highest possible grade of Triple Distinction* for her Art and Design course at NCC Ardleigh Green Campus, Ruqaiya progressed to study a BA at The Slade School of Fine Art. Severely sight-impaired and a guide dog user, Ruqaiya’s work focuses on disability awareness.

Former New City College Art and Design student Ruqaiya Asim was presented with the prestigious People’s Choice Award at this year’s Cass Art Prize competition 2024.

Her winning artwork explores the communication between herself and her guide dog, Bertie, emphasising their trust and bond, while offering a poignant commentary on the challenges faced by sight-impaired individuals in accessing art. Ruqaiya used newsprint and tissue paper, ink monoprints and brailled black card, clay and plaster in her installation.

The Cass Art Prize exhibition, held at the Copeland Gallery in Peckham, celebrates innovative works from emerging artists like Ruqaiya. The People’s Choice Award is voted for by visitors to the exhibition. Many chose her work saying it stood out for its profound exploration of communication and accessibility.

Ruqaiya’s achievement is just one example of the benefits of studying Art and Design at New City College.
