Police praise Public Services students on work experience

Students on a week’s work experience with Essex Police were praised for their professionalism and maturity as they helped officers out in the local community.

The students, all studying Level 3 Public Services at Epping Forest campus, were fantastic representatives of New City College and received great feedback from the police and local residents.

Sgt John Berwick from the Epping Community Policing Team, said: “The students were motivated and their confidence grew from the first day. They were enthusiastic, polite, and well-presented. They not only did New City College proud but they also represented the Policing Community Team very well and we all enjoyed having them working with us.”

While on the placement, the students heard about crime and burglary prevention, how to contact the different police services and Crimestoppers, as well as learning about updated weapon legislation. They then used their communication skills to engage with residents and share the new information with them.

They also joined discussions on missing persons cases and found out about all the factors that have to be considered, and they even got a first-hand look at the National Police Helicopter Service.

Dawn Atkinson, Industry Placement and Work Experience Officer for New City College, said: “We are proud of the way students conducted themselves on their work experience and it is fantastic to get such great feedback from the police officers they worked with.”

At the end of the week the students were given careers advice about the training and the different routes they could take to join the police service once they leave college. They also benefited from practical on the job experience as well as speaking to the officers about their day-to-day duties and what the role involves.
