The overall winner was Jayden, who is studying Creative Media (Moving Image) at Redbridge campus. He won £500 for his piece Bloom. Craig said: “All the judges loved this film. It was very cool, very street and it really took our imagination. We loved the fact that Jayden put background music with the visual, because it brings it alive. The vision and music together is a huge thing and generates raw emotion.”
Second place and winning a prize of £200 was Inés, from Havering Sixth Form campus, who is studying A Level Film Studies, for her film 1:23. Craig said: “This was fantastic. It was shot in a really vintage style, it felt really cool and it looked brilliant on the screen.”
Joint third place – and winning a day on a film set – was given to Alyssa from Epping Forest campus (studying Creative Media Production) and Carlo from Havering Sixth Form campus (studying Creative Media Practice – TV and Film). Craig said Alyssa’s film Getting Qualified had a great storyline and great writing, and Carlo’s piece You Don’t Know My Name was a fantastic music video type of film set to the Alicia Keys song of the same name.
A special award was given to Creative Media Production student Danny, from Epping Forest campus, who wins a prize of work experience. The judges said Danny featured in so many credits in the submissions that he would have an impressive IMDB page! They added he would be the first choice for any film crew as he showed the drive, work ethic and soft skills necessary to excel in the industry.
And another winner was student Woody, from Epping Forest campus, also studying Creative Media Production, who, outside of the competition, used his initiative and approached Craig in February at an earlier launch of the project. Craig was so impressed that he offered Woody work experience at his media production company, Pro Light London. This has led to a full-time employment offer for Woody, waiting for him when he leaves college!
Andy Greaves, Deputy Group Curriculum Director, Creative & Digital, at New City College, said: “Breaking into the TV and film industry is notoriously challenging for young people, due to its highly competitive nature and the many barriers to entry.
“Aspiring young creatives often face a saturated market where networking and connections can be as crucial as talent and creativity, so we’re extremely grateful to Craig, Jonathan and the Fi Hub team for giving our students this opportunity.
“To have work experience and the chance to step out on big budget film sets to see the different roles first-hand is a huge benefit and will give them the confidence to pursue these careers after college.”
