Ben joined the Railway Engineering course at New City College Hackney Campus at the beginning of 2023 because he was looking to find work and build his career within the rail industry.
He settled in immediately, meeting like-minded adult students and forging strong friendships.
Once he had completed the course successfully and passed his Critical Safety Training, he went straight to work on the railway, being employed by the Sponsor he was set up with during his time at college.
Ben thrived in his new job and quickly progressed from a ‘blue hat’ gang member to a ‘white hat’ gang leader, which was a very proud and rewarding moment for his teacher.
Asked what he thought of the course at New City College, he said: “The tuition was great. I really enjoyed all aspects of the course. The skills and knowledge I gained both in the classroom and on the training track put me in a good position for going straight out to work with a railway gang.
“Choosing to study the course really kick-started my career and enabled me to progress in a short space of time. There are plenty of opportunities for promotion in the rail industry, and attending the course was one of the best things I could have done.”
Ben was invited back to New City College Epping Forest campus to speak to students about his experience and to show them what he had achieved since completing the course. He also gave them tips and advice on what working in the rail industry was like.
