Chernae

Chernae is aiming to become a forensic scientist. She is currently studying the BTEC Level 3 Applied Science course at NCC Tower Hamlets campus. She is enjoying college and says she has made many new friends. Find out more in the Q&A below.

 

Tell us about your education journey – what and where did you study before coming to NCC?

I used to go to a secondary school called Urswick and I studied GCSEs including Maths, English, Science, Biology, Drama, Sociology and BTEC PE.

What are your plans for next steps?

I have progressed to the Level 3 Applied Science where I’m hoping to gain more knowledge to prepare for university.

What’s your ambition in life?

My aim is to become a forensic scientist.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned on your course?

Paper chromatography – in forensic science they use it to test certain liquids found on the scene of a crime.

How did New City College help you achieve?

The college helped me gain all the knowledge I needed to achieve the criteria for my BTEC and my teachers pushed me to aim for the top grades.

What values are most important to you?

Patience, respect, creativity, kindness and honesty.

What is the biggest change you wish to see in the world?

To eradicate poverty. I wish that people who are struggling can get the help they need to survive.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

That I am smart and if I keep pushing myself, I can do it! Also that I shouldn’t listen to those who try to put me down.

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your 15-year-old self?

To work harder, to push yourself even if you’re draining yourself because it will benefit you later on.

What makes you feel positive?

Being surrounded by supportive people who push me to do my best because they want to see me accomplish my goals.

Who is your role model?

My brother and sister, because they have helped and encouraged me so much to follow my dreams and to work hard to achieve them.

Who is your favourite teacher and why?

I would have to say Christopher Loney, because he has helped me so much through the year and if I had any questions about the work or other things, he was always there to go through everything with me. He is also really funny in class!

What is the best thing about New City College?

Definitely making new friends. It has been such a pleasure to get to know everyone in my class, they are all so fun to be around and very kind.

If you had three wishes, what would they be?

To be rich.

Be motivated enough to qualify to do forensics.

To live a comfortable life.
