May

May studied the Uniformed Public Services course at NCC’s Epping Forest campus because she would like to become a Firefighter, specialising in Fire Rescue. She won the Student of the Year award 2023 for being an outstanding student.

Tell us about your education journey – what and where did you study before coming to NCC?

I studied at Trinity Catholic High School in Woodford, doing Art, Business and Triple Science.

What are your plans for next steps?

I would like to become a Firefighter in the London Fire Brigade, hopefully specialising in Fire Rescue.

What is your ambition in life?

I have learnt how to conduct myself in high stress environments and my ambition would be to further my knowledge as a team leader in these situations.

How did New City College help you achieve?

It has helped me by enabling me to go to events and by giving me the skills to further my career in the Fire Brigade.

What values are most important to you?

Integrity and kindness are values which are key to me. They are important for the Public Services course that I do and they would get you far in any career in the uniformed services.

What is the biggest change you wish to see in the world?

A change in pay for key workers.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Not to let one person’s comment pull down the rest of your day. This is the best advice I have received.

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your 15-year-old self?

You would be extremely pleased with the things you have achieved within cadets and your personal life.

What makes you feel positive?

The love and support shown by the people around me.

Who is your role model?

My role models are the group Antarctic Fire Angels as they do the job I aspire to do.

Who is your favourite teacher and why?

Steve is my favourite teacher as throughout the year he has pushed me to better my education and myself as a person.

What is the best thing about New City College?

The support from teachers and curriculum managers has been the best. Also you get a lot of help when it comes to decisions you have to make after finishing the course.

If you had three wishes, what would they be?

My three wishes would be to become a firefighter, have a loving family and be able to repay my family for everything they have done for me.
