Rajeka

Rajeka decided to take the English GCSE course at New City College after struggling to help her daughter with her homework. She says studying has helped her rebuild her confidence and advises others to never give up when things get difficult.

Tell us about your education journey – what and where did you study before coming to NCC?

I was working in a primary school last year and decided that I would take GCSE Maths. I wasn’t thinking of doing GCSE English because I was not confident in my writing skills. I was very negative and always put myself down. One day my daughter asked me to help her with English and I couldn’t. That day I thought I am going to do my GCSE English, so I enrolled at the same time as GCSE Maths. The journey doing both was a roller coaster because I had so many other responsibilities as a mother.

What are your plans for next steps?

My next step is to go to university.

What’s your ambition in life?

My ambition is to be of help to my community. This can have a positive impact on my professional development and helping others can make me feel more positive, fulfilled, and self-rewarded. I find that these feelings are essential to develop confidence at work, leadership and interpersonal skills.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned on your course?

I never used to read books, however my English teacher Ozay inspired me to read books that were interesting to me. He also finds different gadgets to help me to enjoy reading.

How has New City College helped you achieve?

I went to the library and revised and used the resources there. I would go there daily to try to improve and I think this has helped me a lot.

What values are most important to you?

I believe the most important value to me is to have confidence in what you do and have faith in yourself.

What is the biggest change you wish to see in the world?

Peace around the world.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Never give up on your dreams and always dream big!

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your 15-year-old self?

Never give up when difficult obstacles come your way, fight all the way and believe in yourself.

What makes you feel positive?

Having supportive friends and family who encourage me all the time, even when things don’t go my way.

Who is your role model?

My husband – he always had faith in me, whereas I didn’t believe in myself.

Who is your favourite teacher and why?

Ozay because he believes in me that I can blossom in my learning. He tried different ways to help me with my dyslexia. We need more teachers like him!

What is the best thing about New City College?

One of the best things about New City College is the café!! I need my coffee in the morning – as a mother, I actually like a coffee to keep me going all day!

If you had three wishes, what would they be?

To be successful in my life.

I want the ability to spread happiness and peace.
