Entry requirements

Three or more GCSEs at Grade 2 including:

  • GCSE English Language and maths at Grade 2 (or equivalent)
  • Successful completion of Entry 3, and appropriate recommendation report

Course information

The City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills is a one-year course which provides you with an excellent initiation into the world of construction. You will gain knowledge and be taught basic skills which will enable you to decide whether construction is the industry in which you would like to work in the future.

There is an emphasis on gaining practical skills. The qualification also promotes the development of wider employment skills, emphasising the importance of appropriate conduct, equipment and dress within a work area, customer service, customer care and safe working practices.

The aims of this qualification are to encourage the development of generic employability skills used within the construction industry. We will give you the opportunity to learn new skills within construction which you can take with you onto your future career and this course will also prepare you for further training within construction.

This qualification provides the ideal introduction to the construction industry and covers essential areas within a variety of construction trades.

Among the trades covered will be (three of the following will be selected)

  • Bricklaying
  • Carpentry and Joinery
  • Plastering
  • Painting and Decorating
  • Construction Operations
  • Wall and Floor Tiling
  • Electrical
  • Plumbing

If you have not achieved grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language, you will study an additional English session alongside this course.

If you have not achieved grade 4 or above in Maths, you will study additional Maths sessions alongside the course.

  • How you are assessed

    All units are internally assessed after you have built up a portfolio of evidence that covers the relevant criteria. Work is then verified by the centre and externally verified by City & Guilds.

What Can This Course Lead To

You can progress into employment or further training in specific trade areas such as Level 1 Trowel Occupations (Bricklaying), Carpentry or Painting & Decorating courses. Students who successfully complete the Level 1 qualification can move onto Level 2 construction courses.
