Course information

This courses has been designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to degree level study in Fashion, or to go into further education and training or directly into employment in the fashion industry. It provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in fashion to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from further to higher education.

You will learn essential skills such as how to research, with a focus on developing your creativity in order to realise your design ideas.You will learn technical processes, including acquiring garment construction skills, such as sewing seams and inserting zips, as well as learning fundamental flat pattern cutting processes.

To enhance your work you will learn how to individualise your garments with print techniques and processes in a fully equipped studio, from simple mono printing and block printing to more advanced techniques such as screen printing; you will also learn textiles processes including how to embroider by hand and machine, dye fabric and use applique.

You can expect to study:

Visual language in fashion, including observational drawings and fashion illustration
Studio practice (garment construction and pattern cutting as well as textiles processes)
Print, including mono printing, block printing, heat transfer printing and screen printing
Researching themes and trends
Materials, processes and technical skills for realising your design ideas
Problem solving in 2D and 3D in relation to pattern cutting and garment construction
Exhibiting your final major project

You will develop various fashion skills and create a portfolio of work to prepare you for further study or employment within the industry.

You will also undertake a final end-of-year project that will allow you to utilise the skills you have acquired. We’re proud of our community of creative artists and you’ll be encouraged to collaborate with others to deliver an industry-like experience. We will support your development as a designer in a range of areas.

What Can This Course Lead To

Successful completion of this course provides students with a portfolio for progression to our Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (which will prepare you for transition to higher education), or directly to degree level courses in a wide range of subjects, such as Fashion and Design, Textiles, Merchandising or Fashion Photography, among others. The course develops a wide range of transferrable skills in presenting, problem solving and collaboration, which are beneficial for most careers. It also enables students to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to go directly to work in the fashion industry, or seek a vocational apprenticeship or trainee role.
