Entry requirements

  • Age 18+
  • All students will be expected to have GCSE maths and English Language qualifications at grade C or above (grade 4 on new framework) or equivalent.
  • Appropriate accredited Level 3 qualifications (for example Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and learning)
  • Be working or volunteering as a teaching assistant for at least 12 hours per week. 
  • Have experience of working as a teaching assistant within an educational setting.
  • Letter of support from your Headteacher.
  • Current enhanced DBS check.
  • Successful completion of interview.

Course information

This qualification is aimed at students employed in a teaching assistant role who wish to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant status.  The purpose is to develop learners knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to address the challenges that they meet in their workplace.  They will also develop an understanding of the knowledge required to support individuals and small groups and to support individuals with a range of additional needs. 

You can expect to study the following units:

  • understand the Higher-Level Teaching Assistant role
  • child development and welfare
  • awareness of special educational needs
  • promoting positive behaviour in children and young people
  • providing support for individual learners and small groups
  • developing skills to promote positive working relationships
  • curriculum planning, delivery and assessment

Study for one evening per week in college plus 12 hours placement per week

  • How you are assessed

    You will be expected to develop a portfolio of evidence from real work/ classroom situations which includes observation feedback, lesson plans, rationales, resources and reflective accounts. You will be also expected to create a power point and a poste
