University Economics Experience helps Academy students extend their learning

An Economics Experience afternoon at the University of Greenwich helped A Level students at New City College apply their studies to real world problems.

Students studying A Level Economics at NCC’s Attlee Academy in east London were taken on a visit to the University of Greenwich where they had the chance to get involved in a group debate activity and a Q&A session with former university students.

While they were in Greenwich the students also had the chance to see some of the area’s renowned history such as the Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory as well as the Queen Anne building at the prestigious university.

During the first part of the Economics Experience the students took part in a group activity with other learners where they had to role play as if they were negotiators at the climate change conference COP25.

The aim was to come to an agreement about the allocation of global oil emissions, which provoked a fierce debate between those representing the global north and south, allowing the lecturer hosting the session to illustrate game theory.

Attlee student Hafsa Sultana said: “The game was interesting and helped me to gain more insight into applying economics to real world problems.”

In the second part of the day, students met former Greenwich Economics students to quiz them about their university life and their careers since graduating, including those who now work in banking, finance and fintech (the use of technology to deliver financial services and products).

NCC student Emeraude Nkinzi said: “I enjoyed hearing from the graduates about their experience of university, their different perspectives on economics and the career paths they took.”

Attlee Academy teacher Steve Jinman said: “This trip to Greenwich was a fantastic way to improve students’ learning outside the classroom and gave them an opportunity to see how economics has an influence on many aspects of our daily lives.”
