Entry requirements
Students must usually have completed the Level 1 Diploma. All places are subject to a satisfactory interview and Skillsbuilder assessment.
Information
This is a one-year full time course and it is designed for students who have achieved the Level 1 Carpentry qualification and who therefore already have some basic knowledge of carpentry. The aim of the course is to develop and widen the practical skills and knowledge required in order to become an employable carpenter.
You can expect to study the following units:
- Principles of building (examination)
- Health and Safety Information (examination)
- First fix floor and roofs
- First fix frames, partitions and stairs
- Second Fix Operations
- Carrying out maintenance
- Set up and operate a circular saw
If you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 or above in English, you will study an additional English course. If you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths, you will study an additional Maths course.
There are two online examinations that must be completed by students with practical assessments completed within a portfolio.
The City and Guilds Level 2 Carpentry course is a practical qualification that is primarily aimed at those students who would like to pursue a career within the construction industry as a carpenter. The course will continue to build upon knowledge gained at Level 1 and will further explore the role of a site carpenter. You will continue to develop and improve your practical skills and will be introduced to more complex and difficult skills required within the industry at first fix and second fix. Visits to construction sites will widen your knowledge of the construction industry.
