Entry requirements

  • Counselling qualification at Level 3 with a minimum of 48 UCAS points.
  • GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above
  • Current DBS is required for some placements (charges may apply)
  • Successful completion of interview is required.

Please note, the college reserves the right to accept evidence of working towards a maths qualification upon completion of a successful interview.

The interview will include participation in a skills/role play activity; a written case study exercise; and a formal interview.

Course information

This degree offers in-depth training in counselling theory, ethics, and practice, with a focus on integrative approaches to client care. It is ideal for those pursuing a career in counselling or therapy.

You will develop the self-awareness, knowledge, and practical skills needed to support clients effectively, particularly those facing vulnerability. The course explores multiple therapeutic models, allowing you to find the approach that aligns best with your personal and professional values.

Key topics

On the BA (Hons) Integrative Counselling programme your study will be closely linked to your experience in the workplace. This is a classroom-based course incorporating a work placement. You will study a selection of modules over the three years:

Level 4
  • context of theory in integrative counselling (30 credits)
  • counselling skills practice (30 credits)
  • preparing to work in a diverse society (30 credits)
  • readiness for personal and professional practice (15 credits)
  • development in the human lifespan (15 credits)
Level 5
  • application of theory in integrative counselling (30 credits)
  • working in a diverse society (30 credits)
  • client work (30 credits)
  • exploring research (15 credits)
  • ethics and professional practice (15 credits)
Level 6
  • counselling evolution (15 credits)
  • client work (15 credits)
  • engaging with mental health issues (30 credits)
  • counselling in a diverse society (15 credits)
  • research project (45 credits)

For full-time students, the course is studied over a period of three years. Attendance is two days per week plus completion of 150 client hours and completion of 60 hours of personal counselling. The course will take place at our Ardleigh Green campus.

  • You will be need to fund BACP membership fees.
  • You will also need to fund a minimum of 20 personal therapy hours per academic year, in addition at Level 5 and 6 you may need to fund monthly supervision if this is not offered by your placement.
  • How you are assessed

    All learning outcomes have to be successfully addressed in the assessment process. All of our teaching staff are experienced professionals in the field of counselling. All students are allocated a personal tutor who will be your first point of communication should you have any queries or concerns. You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods such as presentations, case studies, client recordings, reflective writing and essays. You will also complete a portfolio of your personal counselling hours, client placement hours, clinical supervision reports and five recorded counselling sessions.
  • Next steps

    Successful completion of the course could allow you to set up in private practice as a counsellor, work within the education sector as a schools- based or college-based counsellor, counselling work within the charity sector, further study to a Master's programme or teacher training. You will also be eligible to join the BACP
